Numeral Raises $100 Million In Series C Funding Round

SSuperbCrew is a trusted resource for discovering innovative companies, emerging startups, and the latest technology trends.

Numeral, an AI powered tax compliance platform, has raised a $100 million Series C funding round led by Insight Partners to scale its sales tax automation software and expand into new industries.

Numeral raised a $100 million Series C led by Insight Partners, with participation from Salesforce Ventures, Geodesic, Benchmark, Mayfield, FCVC, Y Combinator, and Uncork. This brings the company’s total funding to approximately $157 million since its 2023 founding.
The capital will accelerate product development, expand offerings into software, manufacturing, distribution, and wholesale, and support hiring across engineering, sales, marketing, and product. Numeral is also deepening partnerships with accounting firms through a new partner program that allows referrals, reselling, white label delivery of services, and advisory involvement.

What is Numeral?

Numeral, based in San Francisco and founded in 2023 by CEO Sam Ross (former Airbnb product manager with e-commerce experience) and CTO Matt DuVall (engineer with Stripe and Notion background), provides an AI powered platform for end to end sales tax, VAT, and GST compliance. It covers the full lifecycle: nexus monitoring, automatic registrations, tax calculation (via a deterministic engine), filings, remittance, exemption certificate management and validation, virtual mailbox services for tax notices, continuous government portal monitoring, AI product classification, and natural language reporting.

Numeral leadership team: Sam Ross (Co-Founder & CEO), Matt DuVall (Co-Founder & CTO), and Hudson Bova (VP of Finance).

The platform supports compliance in more than 90 countries and integrates with over 40 billing, financial, and ERP systems (including Shopify, Stripe, NetSuite, QuickBooks, Xero, BigCommerce, Salesforce, and others). It combines deterministic tax rules with agentic AI and automation, while retaining human tax specialists for complex cases, onboarding, research, and audit support. Numeral guarantees on-time filings or covers penalties and interest.

Customers report up to 80% reductions in time spent on filings and registrations, up to 95% cuts in manual spreadsheet work and filing errors, and up to 400 hours saved annually on exemption certificate management. When migrating certificates, the platform often identifies that 30–40% fail validation.

Numeral reports a 327% year over year increase in total transaction volume and expects its tax engine to process more than 80 million transactions. It serves over 3,500 global businesses (up from roughly 2,000 at the time of its Series B), spanning e-commerce, SaaS/software, and increasingly distribution and manufacturing. Named customers and testimonials reference companies such as Eight Sleep, Graza, Brex, Character.ai, Fishwife, Supabase, and others.

Prior funding included a $35 million Series B in September 2025 (led by Mayfield, at a $350 million valuation) and an $18 million Series A earlier in 2025 (led by Benchmark), plus earlier seed capital that brought pre Series C totals to around $57 million.

Sales tax complexity continues to rise due to evolving rules, multi state and multi country operations, new product categories, and economic nexus thresholds. A key near term catalyst is California’s legislation extending sales and use tax to prewritten software (including SaaS and electronically delivered or remotely accessed software) beginning in 2027. Similar expansions and ongoing changes across jurisdictions create persistent monitoring and system update burdens for growing companies.

The opportunity sits at the intersection of regulatory pressure, the limitations of traditional manual processes or legacy software, and the maturity of AI for high stakes, rules-heavy domains where deterministic engines can minimize hallucination risk while AI handles volume and exception workflows. Numeral positions itself as delivering “tax compliance as an outcome” rather than pure software that still leaves operational burden on the customer.

Insight Partners (with over $90 billion in assets under management and a focus on high growth software) led the round, citing Numeral’s reliability, accuracy, service levels, and ability to democratize sophisticated compliance infrastructure via AI. Geodesic Capital highlighted the combination of deep tax expertise and AI native infrastructure.

The competitive set includes the large incumbent Avalara (Vista Equity-backed, previously public and expected to return to public markets), as well as newer players such as Anrok and Zamp. Differentiation claims center on broader international coverage (including smaller markets), a hybrid AI plus human model with strong service guarantees, transparent or outcome oriented economics for certain segments, and expansion beyond pure e-commerce/SaaS into adjacent verticals. The market features both self service software models and fully managed service approaches; Numeral emphasizes the latter blended with technology.

The $100 million raise (described in some coverage as sitting in the top tier of U.S. fintech Series C sizes) signals strong investor conviction in vertical AI applications for compliance infrastructure. It positions Numeral to scale product depth, geographic and industry coverage, team size, and go to market motion, particularly through accounting firm channels, while continuing to invest in both technology and tax expertise as it moves upmarket toward larger businesses. Regulatory tailwinds, demonstrated transaction growth, and a clear product roadmap focused on reducing operational burden provide the core thesis for the financing.
