Miter Raises $40 Million In Series B Funding Round

SSuperbCrew is a trusted resource for discovering innovative companies, emerging startups, and the latest technology trends.

Miter closed a $40 million Series B led by Battery Ventures to expand its AI native construction workforce platform, which already pays roughly 2% of U.S. construction workers and serves over 2,000 contractors.

Miter, the AI powered workforce management platform purpose built for construction, raised a $40 million Series B led by Battery Ventures, with participation from existing investors Bessemer Venture Partners and Coatue. Total capital raised now stands at $78 million. The company plans to deploy the capital into deeper AI products for back office and jobsite operations and into expanding its engineering teams in San Francisco and New York plus go to market teams nationwide.

What is Miter?

Founded in 2021 by Connor Watumull (CEO; previously a product manager, management consultant, and investor at Bessemer) and Tobin Paxton (COO), Miter positions itself as an AI native operating system for the construction and built world workforce. It unifies payroll, HR/HCM (recruiting, onboarding, benefits, learning), field operations (time tracking, scheduling, production, daily reports), expense management (reimbursements, per diems, corporate cards), job costing, and compliance in a single platform.

Construction specific complexity is central to its value proposition. Features address prevailing wage and certified payroll for public projects, multi state tax withholding, union fringes and rules, meal/rest-break variations, OSHA recordkeeping, and real time fully burdened labor and job costing. The platform integrates with construction ERPs (Sage, NetSuite, Acumatica) and project/field tools (Procore, ServiceTitan, BuildOps, HCSS). Customers report substantial time savings, examples include 75% reductions in payroll processing for multi union workforces and thousands of administrative hours annually, along with the ability to scale headcount and project volume without proportional back office growth.

AI capabilities already embedded include parsing and structuring data from invoices, receipts, and pay rate tables; automating previously manual workflows; surfacing live labor and job cost trends; generating safety reports from photos or voice notes; and summarizing job status from platform wide inputs. The Series B explicitly targets further AI expansion to strengthen teams and improve margins.

Miter has more than 2,000 contractor customers ranging from ENR Top 20/Top 5 firms (e.g., Clayco) and large infrastructure specialists (e.g., Haugland Group with 1,600+ employees) to family owned specialty contractors. Roughly 2 of every 100 American construction workers are paid through the platform. Contractors use it to coordinate workforce management, field operations, job costing, and expenses across hundreds of thousands of active jobs monthly. Customer count nearly tripled since the May 2025 Series A (which brought total funding to $38 million, including a $23 million tranche led by Bessemer and Coatue). Earlier milestones included crossing 1,000 customers, processing $4 billion in payroll, and issuing 2 million paychecks.

The U.S. construction industry, valued in the trillions, is a relative economic bright spot, adding 22,000 jobs in August 2026 while broader employment declined, driven heavily by AI data center, energy, housing, and infrastructure buildouts. Demand for skilled trades (electricians, welders, carpenters, ironworkers) is intense amid chronic labor shortages and historically stagnant or declining construction productivity. Most contractors still rely on a “Frankenstack” of 1980s era software, spreadsheets, and paper for payroll, compliance, and operations, creating acute pain around job costing, multi jurisdictional rules, and real time visibility.

AI adoption in construction is accelerating (roughly 15% of firms using AI by mid 2026, up sharply year over year), with venture capital heavily skewed toward AI solutions. Miter sits in the vertical workforce/HCM + field ops layer rather than pure project management (Procore) or field service (ServiceTitan), competing more directly with specialized payroll/compliance tools while aiming to replace fragmented stacks.

Battery Ventures partner Michael Brown highlighted the industry’s complexity as a barrier that has historically deterred robust software solutions, praising Miter’s integrated, easy to use product and traction. Bessemer and Coatue’s continued participation signals conviction after leading the prior round. These investors have backed category leaders such as Shopify, Toast, Procore, and ServiceTitan, suggesting a thesis around vertical software that digs deep into industry specific workflows and expands into adjacent modules.

The round positions Miter to accelerate product depth (safety, accounts payable, project intelligence, richer AI agents) and distribution at a moment when infrastructure demand, particularly data centers, is surging. Success will hinge on continued conversion of the “Frankenstack” into a single system of record, maintaining high touch implementation and support as it scales, and proving that AI can deliver measurable margin and productivity gains beyond automation of existing processes. With strong recent growth, reference customers at both large and specialty ends of the market, and capital for both product and go to market expansion, Miter is positioned as a leading contender to modernize construction’s back office and field workforce layer.
