Convex closed a $57 million Series B led by Insight Partners, with participation from Etna Labs, a16z, Spark Capital, and Justin Kan, lifting its total funding to $110.5 million to scale its reliability focused backend for AI agent written software.
Convex’s $57 million Series B is a growth round led by Insight Partners, with participation from Etna Labs, existing investors a16z (Andreessen Horowitz) and Spark Capital, and angel Justin Kan. It brings the company’s total funding to $110.5 million.
Convex, founded in 2021 by former Dropbox infrastructure engineers (CEO Jamie Turner, CTO James Cowling, and others who scaled systems serving hundreds of millions of users), previously raised a seed round (approximately $3.5 million in late 2021 from Neo Ventures, Netlify’s Jamstack Innovation Fund, General Catalyst, SV Angel, and others) and a $26 million Series A in April 2022 led by a16z (with Martin Casado joining the board). A further $24 million round in November 2025 was led by a16z and co-led by Spark Capital. The new Series B more than doubles the prior capital base and marks Insight Partners’ entry as lead. No valuation was disclosed.
What is Convex?
Convex positions itself as a reactive, all in one TypeScript backend platform (database + functions + workflow + real time sync + search + file storage + auth + RAG) with zero glue code. Core technical claims include ACID transactions by default, end to end type safety, automatic caching/scaling, and real time subscriptions. The platform is framed as purpose built for the “AI era,” in which developers and coding agents co-author software.

The company argues that traditional backends (e.g., Postgres plus assorted services) create silent correctness failures when agents generate code. In Convex’s internal testing, 90% of AI built apps on traditional databases corrupted data in real world scenarios, while Convex based apps showed a zero percent failure rate. Features such as typed schemas, ACID guarantees, and sandboxed Convex Components (isolated mini backends with explicit APIs) are presented as making correctness the default rather than an engineering discipline that must be manually enforced. Components are described as “context window sized” units that agents can reason about safely without holding an entire codebase in view.
CEO Jamie Turner has characterized the current state of the product as “a great idea and a pretty good implementation,” with the new capital intended to close that gap and support the scale customers already request.
Traction Metrics
- Nearly 2 million applications powered by the platform
- Close to 500,000 developers
- Over 1.2 million weekly npm downloads
- Millions of Convex instances running in production
- Enterprise plans launched, with dozens of companies already on them
- European hosting live for EU data residency
- Named customers include OpenAI, Zapier, Tripadvisor, Solana, and Reducto
- Earlier (2025) disclosures referenced more than 10× growth in customers, projects, and revenue over a nine month period and nearly 10,000 paying teams by early 2026.
The platform emphasizes enterprise readiness (SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, RBAC/SSO; VPC deployment coming soon).

How will Convex use the funds?
Proceeds will fund core product development, investments in agentic development tooling, and hiring across engineering, engineering leadership, product, marketing, and go to market at the San Francisco headquarters. The company is actively recruiting to meet demand for larger scale agentic workloads and additional out of the box capabilities integrated into its reactive state graph.
Insight Partners Managing Director Teddie Wardi highlighted that AI coding agents are changing software construction while exposing weaknesses in traditional backends; Convex’s integrated, reliability first design makes it a compelling foundation for both human developers and agents. Follow-on participation by a16z and Spark Capital signals continued conviction from prior backers.
The round sits within a wave of investor interest in infrastructure that makes agent generated code safe and reliable to ship. Convex’s thesis is that as the cost of writing code approaches zero, the value of good abstractions, clear boundaries, and principled system design rises sharply. The company is leaning into this narrative with its own conference (Abstract, September 2, 2026, in San Francisco) focused on craft, simplicity, and the residual role of humans in an increasingly abstracted software world.
Competitive context includes other backend and developer platform players (e.g., Supabase and similar reactive or BaaS offerings), but Convex differentiates on the combination of transactional correctness, type safety, real time reactivity, and explicit agent oriented design. Growth from hobbyist and startup usage into enterprise and high ambition agentic workloads appears to be the central near term execution challenge the capital is intended to address.
The $57 million Series B validates Convex’s shift from a developer friendly reactive backend into infrastructure optimized for the reliability demands of AI augmented software development, backed by strong usage metrics, enterprise traction, and a syndicate that includes both growth oriented and long term technical investors.
